VCode is proprietary British technology. It was founded by Louis-James Davis and developed into a working identification platform well before the industry settled on vocabulary like “connected packaging” or “phygital”.

Proprietary technology
The intellectual property comprises more than a mark. It includes:
- the symbology: the visual encoding itself, and its namespaced capacity of 72 quadrillion possibilities per namespace, presently spanning approximately 2.2 quintillion identifiers;
- the resolution model: a closed loop in which only the platform can generate an authentic code and only approved software can resolve one;
- the rules engine: conditions evaluated centrally at the moment of the scan rather than baked into the code;
- the platform and API: generation, actions, packages, scan history and analytics.
Why the design matters commercially
Because a VCode refers rather than contains, the issuer keeps control after distribution. That is difficult to retrofit onto a data-carrying code, and it is the reason the technology suits identity, authentication and provenance rather than marketing links alone.
